Who are we?

Alexa - Chandler - Jessie - Mel - Talia

We are all attending post-secondary at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby BC, Canada. We enrolled in GSWS 204 in the Spring of 2016 and were inspired for our final class project to critically analyze themes, stereotypes, and misrepresentations of sex workers in film and televison.

We are not sex workers, and therefore we do not represent the lived experiences of sex workers. We are merely allies trying to change the way the general public interprets media representations of sex workers in order to improve understanding of who sex workers are.

What is sex work?

The term "sex work" refers to a wide range of occupations within the broader sex industry. Sex work is often misunderstood by individuals as referring to only street-based sex work (thanks to media misrepresentations).  In reality, sex workers include call girls, phone sex operators, exotic dancers, web cam models, porn actresses, etc. There is more to the sex industry than the narrow stereotypes that are continuously presented in popular media outlets.

Our purpose

To challenge common stereotypes and misconceptions about sex work in the hopes that educating media consumers will help eliminate negative stigma associated with individuals who work in the sex industry.

To provide access to resources that will further educate media consumers on the realities of sex work and the various ways in which it is regulated.
